Back in business

After a lengthy blogging hiatus we are back with a new blog (one that works!) and a new season full of adventures.

Things around the shop this year have been very busy and exciting, we have seen many new and awesome products added to our line despite supply issues from China, we have added some fantastic new summertime staff to our group to help us through the busy season and for the second year in a row we have taken home top honours at the HSBC Celebration of Light in Vancouver's English Bay!

Our show entitled "Attack" narrowly beat out the Chinese team but was decided as the winner based on our original theme and innovative story-telling style of show. The following quote from Head Judge Tiko Kerr made us smile:

“In the final analysis the country that swayed my decision presented, in my mind, a new kind of fireworks experience, never seen before,” said Kerr. “The winner presented a complete narrative; a dramatic concept, executed with incomparable choreography and precision, that took the audience on an astonishing theatrical journey. This was not mere pyrotechnics to songs strung together. We feel it is the beginning of a brave and imaginative new experience in fireworks, where a tale is told in fantastic exploding abstractions.”

We took a chance this year with our show and are very happy it was well received!

Stay tuned for more frequent blog updates!

Happy Shooting,
Archangel Fireworks Team

Summer and the CFA

The snow is melting and we are busy getting ready for the season here at the shop, some new paint and a little elbow grease goes a long way. Stop by and check out some of our new products (can you say barrages the size of a small car!?)

We have new cakes that are going to step up and take their place alongside The Menace in our staff favorites and the season is only just beginning!

We will kick off our summer hours with the addition of Thursday evenings.
Archangel Fireworks will remain open until 8pm thursdays and fridays starting on April 17th for all your fireworks needs.

Canadian Fireworks Association
"The Canadian Fireworks Association ACP (CFA/ACP) is an association focused on increasing safety and knowledge of Firework Supervisors, Pyrotechnicians and the public in a time where there is a growing demand for firework displays."

The Canadian fireworks community will come together in Winnipeg this spring for their annual convention. A tradeshow, seminars on all things pyro and displays and demos done by companies from across the country. You may even get a chance to see an amazing sight rarely seen in this country, a 16″ shell!
The last time a shell this size graced the Canadian skies was in 2002 in Ottawa.

To attend you must be a member of the CFA and if you click this fancy little link you can register right now!

Meet the Crew

Archangel Fireworks Inc. is made up of five full time staff memebers and two part time staffers.

Kelly Guille - President
Kelly began his career in pyrotechnics through an unlikely venue, repackaging gummy snakes and jelly beans for discount stores with D.Y.M Enterprises. When D.Y.M got into selling fireworks Kelly got interested, he took the federal training course through the Explosives Regulatory Division at 18 and by 20 was shooting most of the shows, in his early 20’s he began importing fireworks from Spain. In 2003 Kelly bought out the fireworks division of D.Y.M, which the former owners had named Archangel Fireworks, and incorporated it. In 2004 Kelly moved Archangel Fireworks Inc. to its current location at 104 Pembina Highway. Kelly is also a board member with the Canadian Pyrotechnic Council who works to keep the pyrotechnic industry in Canada healthy without over regulation.

Sean Procter - Operations Manager
Like Jack Torrance from The Shining, Sean has always been "the caretaker" of Archangel Fireworks. What started as a part time job has become 8 years with the company as operations manager, accountant and marketing. With a background in sound engineering Sean designs many of our show soundtracks and many of our shows for that matter. He has an eye (and an ear) for detail.

Tim Langevin - Sales Representative
Tim has been shooting fireworks since 1988 and has been full time with Archangel since 2003. Heading up Archangels "Rural Division" he works from his home office in Elie Manitoba. Tim not only shoots some of Archangels largest and most complex shows he also deals with all customers and local fire departments.

Shawn Frosst - Operations Assistant
Shawn Frosst has been shooting fireworks since 2000 and has been full time with Archangel since 2004.
If you want to know anything about our equipment, ask Shawn. He is the master of the warehouse and the keeper of the magazine. Before shows Shawn lovingly packs our trucks and trailers with gear and deals with the sometimes messy re-packed trucks and trailers when we return.

Leiah Beck - Retail Sales Manager
Leiah has been shooting fireworks since 2001 and has been full time with Archangel since 2005. The one thing Leiah sucks at is writing about herself in the third person, it has taken her weeks to write these two sentences! Ask her about any of the products in the showroom however and she will dazzle you with her knowledge of all things family fireworks.

Mike Fehr - Shipper/Receiver & Retail Sales
Mike Fehr has been a fixture at the shop since 2002. Mike is a master of shipping and making descriptive sound effects. If you have ever dealt with him in the showroom you may have heard terms like "barf" or "fart" while he is describing your show to you but it always makes perfect sense!

Toby Hughes - Retail Sales
Toby Hughes is the newest addition to the Archangel Team, Toby started on with us part time in the summer of 2006 and has been support staff ever since. Toby leads an exciting life between being a bike courier, an actor and now an employee here at Archangel. He is also an apprentice fireworks supervisor.

Fun with family fireworks

a spectator brought in a couple videos from a family fireworks display we did for a wedding this summer. We always love to see your photos and videos here at the shop because we rarely get to see fireworks shows (we are too busy lighting them!). I figured I would share them with you all!

It’s beginning to look a lot like fireworks...

The temperature is dropping and we are seeing snow here and there in Winnipeg but it doesn't mean that fireworks season is over. Our store is open year round and we are starting to gear up for our second busiest season, Christmas and New Years.

The annual Santa Claus Parade ( http://www.winnipegsantaparade.com ) is this Saturday in Winnipeg followed up by a fireworks show at The Forks at 8pm to kick off the holiday season.

As we are booking more and more fireworks shows for new years eve our staff are busily planning their shows and checking them twice. A lot of work goes into the behind the scenes part of fireworks that most people never see. Hours of set up and days/weeks and even months of planning, preparing and designing fireworks shows and almost every here at the shop has some hand in the production of each show. From quotes and dealing with customers to picking the shells and equiptment to figuring out logistics it can be a difficult and time consuming process but the staff here, despite sometimes being a little sleep deprived, loves a good busy season. The satisfaction of a show enjoyed by thousands and a chance to get our hands dirty.

So the next time you are watching a fireworks show, be it a smaller show for a company bbq or a large scale display remember all the work that goes on behind the scenes and all the people who all had a hand in producing those few minutes of spectacular colour and light in the sky.

We have the coolest jobs in the world!

Supervisors Weekend 2007

I just want to thank all of our many supervisors who came out this weekend to our Supervisor Weekend in Brandon Manitoba. It was a great oppourtunity for all of our supervisors to share ideas and tips and tricks with each other and just get a chance to hang out and spend time together.

We thought having 30 supervisors working together side by side might get a little hairy at times but the team worked extremely smoothly together and in no time at all we reproduced a scaled back version of part of our competition show from Sherbrooke Quebec which we called 'Mini-Attaque".

So thanks again to the team and to Noel for taking this video, here is a small clip of the show we put on in Brandon on Saturday, and to any fireworks spectators who got a surprise show, we hope you enjoyed it!!

Pyro and Display Fireworks Courses

Around this time of year I start my usual collection of names of people who are interested in taking the Explosives Regulatory Division courses on Pyrotechnics and Display Fireworks.

The courses are just one day each and involve classroom and hands on as well as a written test. After taking the course you will become an assistant/apprentice. Typically the course happens just once a year in the spring but if we get enough people we may be able to have a winter course as well.

For more information or to add your name to the list for these courses please call Leiah at

Archangel Fireworks Photography Contest 2007

Our first ever photography contest has come to a close for the 2007 year. Participants had the entire summer to take in some of Archangel Fireworks many displays throughout the province/country and submit their photographs for a chance to win fireworks.

Unfortunately none of our fabulous prizes could be given away as no entries were received. We hope that everyone had many oppourtunities to enjoy our fireworks shows and got lots of practice should we have another photo contest next summer!

We are always excited to see photos or videos of our shows so please feel free to share them with the staff here. It gives us a whole new perspective on how our shows look (we only see them from directly underneath!)

A cool breeze is blowing

Fall is on it's way, the nights are getting colder and the days are getting shorter but the fireworks season is far from over. We still have lots of shows coming up and lots of projects on the go. One of our guys is still out assisting with the shows at Globalfest in Calgary, back at the shop we are winding down from a busy summer of fireworks shows and competitions. Fall and winter give us a great opportunity to get our shop back in order and take care of all kinds of projects to help us get organized for New Years Eve and then the upcoming summer.

Our first fireworks photography contest is still going on, all you photographers out there have until just after the September long weekend to get your photos in for judging. If you haven't yet made it out to any shows to snap some photos there is still time. This week we have the Goldeyes happening on Tuesday August 28th for their fan appreciation day which is usually the largest Goldeyes show and will be a great photo op!

We have a nice shipment of fireworks arriving any minute now so come on down to the shop to pick up some fireworks for the September long weekend, I recommend the Diablo!

We Won!

The beautiful trophy now sits in our showroom and the staff here is absolutely buzzing with excitement after a unanimous decision for Archangel Fireworks - Team Canada on Saturday night. It's a wonderful feeling to know that so many people enjoyed our show in Vancouver's HSBC Celebration of Light, as we came into the competition as the underdogs. It was a great honour to be competing against Spain and China, world leaders in pyrotechnics.

We want to thank everybody who made this possible. Everyone who lent their support and well wishes, friends and family, suppliers and the Canadian fireworks industry. Last but not least, the staff who put in long hours at the shop in preparation for this event.

Here are links to some photos and articles to do with our participation in the 2007 HSBC Celebration of Light:

Archangel Fireworks impresses Vancouver and the World!

On Saturday night Archangel Fireworks shot their first international pyromusical competition, HSBC Celebration of Light in Vancouver B.C. to a crowd of hundreds of thousands of people.
All the long hours our dedicated staff have put in over the past months has paid off, the show was a success!

Archangel Fireworks took their place among world fireworks leaders Spain and China and showed just what a small Manitoba Company can accomplish.

Only a day after the show and we are proudly reading wonderful reviews from newspaper articles to blogs from happy fireworks fans!

from the blog http://www.thefrymanlife.com/:
"…It was the turn for Canada to do their best at the show, and wow, I was really glad I was able to get to see it because it was incredible. It will be very difficult to beat this one; the fireworks were colorful, the sincronization with the background music was perfect and there were some fireworks that I had never seen in my life: they were full of colors, and as they fell they looked like small stars, I can't really describe it but it was something just amazing."

From Kirk LaPointes' Column in the Vancouver Sun titled "The Show":
"…Surprise, surprise. A newish Canadian company knocked the socks off the crowd Saturday at the HSBC Celebration of Light, and the warm reception was not merely a matter of rooting for the home team. Even though it is pitted against more experienced teams from Spain and China, the Canadian contingent gave a superlative performance…"

and from the www.canada.com article titled "Canada puts on strong show" written by John Colebourn of The Province:
"…In a dazzling display of lights, Archangel Fireworks Inc. from Manitoba showed they were serious in their first major international fireworks competition.
Those watching the show said the unique pyrotechnical display set to tunes by the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Duke Ellington and Nat King Cole could be a winner with the judges in the three nights of competition…"

New links to videos and photos are popping up left, right and centre and the staff is thrilled to see them ( especially those of us who couldnt be there to see the actual show ) so feel free to post your links in the comment section or email them to leiah@archangelfireworks.com.

Remember, photos from Vancouver can also be entered in our photo contest for your chance to win a fireworks package!
